1 〔かたち〕 a shape; a form; 〔外見〕 appearance; 〔風采〕 presence; 〔姿〕 a figure; 〔姿勢〕 a posture; a pose.

格好がよい have a good shape [good proportions]; be well-shaped; be shapely; look good [⇒かっこいい]

・ブラウスの襟は上着の外に出したほうが格好がいいよ. It'll look better with the blouse collar outside the jacket.

・格好が悪い have a bad shape [bad proportions]; be badly shaped [ill-proportioned, unshapely]; 〔見てくれがよくない〕 look funny 《in that suit》 [⇒かっこわるい]

・キュウリは格好が悪いと売れないんだ. Cucumbers don't sell unless they are a good shape [the right shape]. | You can't sell cucumbers if they are a bad shape [the wrong shape, misshapen].

・これはそれと格好が似ている. This is similar to that in shape. | This and that have the same sort of shape.

・アヒルの歩く格好をまねる imitate the walk of a duck [the way a duck walks, a duck's way of walking].

●その時のあいつの格好ったらなかった. He did look ridiculous [absurd, stupid] then. | What a ridiculous appearance he made at that time!

2 〔体裁〕 appearance.

●知っている人の前でドジをふんで, ちょっと格好が悪かった. Having put my foot in it in front of somebody I knew I felt rather foolish. | Making a gaffe in front of people I knew made me look a bit of a fool.

・たまに訪ねるのに手土産なしでは格好が悪い. As we only go occasionally, it would look bad [make a bad impression, be awkward] to visit him without a present.

・贈り物は箱に入れたほうが格好がいいと思う. I think gifts look better [make a better impression] (if they are packed) in a box.

・あの松を植えたのでなんとか庭として格好がついた. The garden looks better [more as a garden should, 《口》 more like it] with that pine.

・床の間に掛け軸がないと格好がつかない. An alcove would not look like an alcove [one] without a hanging scroll.

・会長に挨拶してもらわないと格好がつかない. It wouldn't be a proper meeting without a few words from the chairman.
